Paper Tiger

knitting, baking, and reading in Norway

september

A hand in a light grey cabled mitt holds a vibrant multi-colored maple leaf over a grassy lawn and a pair of black leather boots. The leaf is mostly red and orange, with splotches of yellow and threads of bright green running through it.

September went by in a flash. It was a busy month of strange highs and lows on a personal level, but I looked for the small moments of beauty and joy where I could find them. On September 1, I had to turn the heaters on, and by this past final weekend of the month, the mountains across the fjord were dusted with snow on top. There’s been no question it’s autumn in Trondheim.

My little one likes to collect little treasures on the walk to preschool, which I enjoy very much.

Four maple leaves in orange and red lay on the dirt and gravel. The bright colors are in stark contrast to the grey-brown ground beneath them.
Maple leaves turning orange and red and rose bushes full of dark red rosehips grow together in front of many more trees in the background
Grey and green rocks near the shore covered in little red and orange leaves.
A patch of red clover and grass covered in large dew drops.

My natural surroundings have fortunately provided quite a lot of moments of beauty, both in sunshine and wetter weather. There is so much color around at this time of year, in stark contrast to the winter months where so much of the world around me is covered in snow.

I’ve been making too, spending a lot of time knitting (The Academic by Skeindeer Knits) and a little bit of time spinning (fiber by Marina Skua in the most perfect colorway for autumn spinning). But more on both of those projects at a later date! Keeping me company while I knit was a full re-read of The Lord of the Rings, a combination of reading and listening, and the audiobook in particular kept me company through most of the knitting. I had forgotten that September is kind of the perfect time for that, given that it’s September both when the story opens and when it draws to a close. I finished The Return of the King last night and I’m actually feeling a little sad to be done, even as it will be nice to return to other books again. But it is also somehow satisfying to reach the end at the end of the month.

October will be the month where my PhD defense prep is in full swing (the viva is the very final step in Norway, so once it’s done I’m done), and it will be more than a little busy in these parts, but I love this time of year and I’m continuing to do my best to enjoy it
